Follow your Arrow

Thursday already? Wow! Time is seriously flying way too fast. Is anyone else as shocked as I am that it’s already January 23rd?! Craziness! Anyways, on to our review…

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a huge country music fan! Although I like pretty much every type of music (except rap…I have to draw the line somewhere) country just get me, you know?

I thought this week I would talk about one of my new favourite songs, Follow your arrow by Kascy Musgraves. To be completely honest, the first time I heard it I didn’t even get to the chorus. I didn’t get the point of the lyrics (I’m all about the lyrics to a song) and the tune just didn’t grab me right away. Then a little while ago, I was in the car with my boyfriend and this amazing song came on the radio! I looked over at his satellite radio box-thing that sits on his dashboard (clearly I don’t have a huge understanding for technology) and it was the same song!
Ever since, I can’t seem to get enough of it.

She does a great job at catching your attention, I was really listening the first time I heard it and although I didn’t care for it, I was too quick to jump to conclusions about the whole song. I didn’t give it the fair chance it deserved. I think we’re all guilty of that, about way more things than just songs. (I think I hear another post coming…) The song has some great lyrics that I’ll post below that really make you think. They certainly made me think! It talk about how extreme different people’s perceptions can be and I have to say her examples are quite accurate.

The very first line is ‘If you save yourself for marriage you’re a bore. You don’t save yourself for marriage you’re a horr-ible person’. Talk about getting right to the point, but this is so true! Society is so judgmental, and so extreme in those judgments. Just because we don’t agree with someone’s choices does not give us the right to decide whether it’s right or wrong for that individual. So totally not my job; my job is to love and that is all.

She makes mention of many different ‘touchy subjects’ throughout the song, saying to ‘kiss lots of boys, or kiss lots of girls if that’s something you’re into’ and to ‘roll up a joint…or don’t’ when the straight seems a bit too straight. I like that she took a step and put herself out there to get her message across, knowing she certainly wouldn’t please everyone. That’s what I personally learned the most.

Kacey sings ‘just follow your arrow wherever it points.’ You can’t please everyone and you just have to know and understand that. This has been a huge thing for me lately.

I’ve always wanted to be a “real blogger”; actually dedicate my time and energy into it because I love to write and what better way to share that in the 21st century than through a blog? But I was always hesitant because I didn’t know if people would like what I had to say. Would anyone read it?
Would people think what I’m saying is stupid?
This song taught me that it’s not about all those people who are or aren’t reading it or do or don’t think it’s stupid. I need to write about what I want to write about and it’ll be an amazing bonus if it inspires someone, is a little food for thought, or just makes them smile. As much as I want everyone to like my writing, I need to actually start writing things to give people the chance.

Thank you Kacey, for being an inspiration and sharing such a great song with us all! (Love your hair in the video too!)

If you save yourself for marriage, you're a bore.
You don't save yourself for marriage, you're a horrible person.
If you won't have a drink, then you're a prude.
But they'll call you a drunk as soon you down the first one.

If you can't lose the weight, then you're just fat.
But if you lose too much, then you're on crack.
You're damned if you do, and you're damned if you don't,
So you might as well just do whatever you want.

Chorus:
So, make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys,
Or kiss lots of girls, if that's something you're into.
When the straight and narrow gets a little too straight,
Roll up a joint, or don't.
Just follow your arrow wherever it points, yeah.
Follow your arrow wherever it points.

If you don't go to church, you'll go to hell.
If you're the first one on the front row, you're a self-righteous son-of-a--
Can't win for losing, you'll just disappoint 'em,
Just cause you can't beat 'em, don't mean you should join 'em.

Say what you think. Love who you love.
Cause you just get so many trips round the sun.
Yeah, you only, only live once.

So, make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys,
Or kiss lots of girls, if that's what you're into.
When the straight and narrow gets a little too straight,
Roll up a joint, I would.
And follow your arrow wherever it points, yeah.
Follow your arrow wherever it points.
